RELEASE like Federer for Power & Shape | forehand tennis lesson

By Essential Tennis · Supporting technique, not an exact drill demo

Watch on YouTube

Forehand release and swing mechanics. This is not a demonstration of Ace's 3-set shadow-swing routine.

Ace viewing focus

  • The relationship between the racket drop and forward swing
  • A relaxed release rather than forcing the wrist

Source title and creator checked 2026-10-11. Footage and coaching-quality review pending. Ace's practice steps and viewing notes are separate from the creator's lesson. If playback is unavailable, use the YouTube link.

Ace technique notes · Forehand

  1. 1. Ready & split step

Land the split as the opponent makes contact.

Common fault: Flat-footed, late first step.

  2. 2. Unit turn

Shoulders and hips turn together, off-hand on the throat.

    Common fault: Arm-only takeback.

  3. 3. Racket drop

Racket head falls below the ball, wrist relaxed.

Common fault: Swinging level — no topspin.

  4. 4. Contact

Out in front, beside the front hip, eyes still.

Common fault: Contact jammed beside the body.

  5. 5. Finish

Over the opposite shoulder, chest to the net.

Common fault: Stopping the swing at contact.

Drills to train it

Forehand shadow swings

8 min

beginner · intermediate

Groove a compact unit turn and low-to-high swing path.

  1. Split step, then turn shoulders with both hands on the racket
  2. Drop the racket head below the ball line
  3. Swing up and through, finish over the opposite shoulder
  4. 3 sets of 15 slow reps, then 10 at match speed
  • Turn before you run
  • Brush up the back of the ball
  • Finish by your ear

Crosscourt forehand rally – 20 ball target

15 min

intermediate · advanced · pro

Build consistent depth and margin crosscourt.

  1. Place a target zone 1 m inside the baseline corner
  2. Rally crosscourt with a partner or ball machine
  3. Count balls landing in the zone; reset at an unforced error
  4. Goal: 20 in a row (pro: add inside-out every 5th ball)
  • Net clearance 1 m+
  • Recover toward the angle-bisector of likely replies
  • Adjust spacing to the height of the incoming ball
